From the traditional straw guy to a painted sheet-metal mermaid, these 30 scarecrows and their yard figure cousins are simply out of the ordinary—and that’s great news for the many crafters who compete in “Best Scarecrow” contests held at fairs and other venues throughout America. It’s easy to construct one of these wildly creative figures with the information and instruction contained in this whimsical, charming celebration of scarecrow art. Some are crafted from organic materials such as gourds and bamboo. Others use recycled items, including a “Tin Can Man” and a quirky woman made from old umbrellas. A few double as a planter, trellis, or address marker. Whether to scare away birds or attract attention to the garden, these make great additions to any outdoor space.

Although the garden may beckon as strongly as ever, the tasks involved—pulling weeds, pushing wheelbarrows, digging holes, moving heavy pots—become increasingly difficult, or even impossible, with advancing age. But the idea of giving it up is unthinkable for most gardeners. So what’s the alternative?
In Gardening for a Lifetime, now in paperback, Sydney Eddison draws on her own forty years of gardening to provide a practical and encouraging roadmap for scaling back while keeping up with the gardening activities that each gardener loves most. Like replacing demanding plants like delphiniums with sturdy, relatively carefree perennials like sedums, rudbeckias, and daylilies. Or taking the leap and hiring help—another pair of hands, even for a few hours a week, goes a long way toward getting a big job done. Or maybe it makes sense to get rid of high-maintenance trees, shrubs, or perennials.

Breed Your Own Vegetable Varieties: Popbeans, Purple Peas, and Other Innovations from the Backyard Garden (Paperback)~ Carol Deppe
For those amateurs who want even more involvement with gardening than the planning, planting, thinning, weeding, watering, mulching, and harvesting that the average vegetable garden requires, this book will provide the answer. Deppe, who holds a Ph.D. in biology from Harvard University, relates the efforts of adventuresome gardeners to improve their favorite vegetables, including her own experiments with plants such as chickpeas and mustard greens. Since most commercial varieties of vegetables are bred for characteristics not necessarily valued by the home gardener (uniformity, tough skins for shipping, etc.), the home gardener can breed for better taste, nutrition, and hardiness. This pursuit is not for the botanical dilettante, however. Deppe stresses the legitimate need for scientific record keeping and reviews the basic principles of genetics and probability. The text concludes with a glossary, annotated bibliography, and several appendixes, including a very useful one on breeding some of the more popular vegetables. This book will have a limited audience, but for those willing to take up the trowel, it will be essential.
